    Cancellation of WorldSkills Shanghai 2022

The current lockdowns in Shanghai and ongoing pandemic prevention and control restrictions in China make hosting the event not possible in 2022.

Today WorldSkills International, in agreement with WorldSkills Members, WorldSkills Shanghai 2022 Executive Bureau, and WorldSkills China (MOHRSS) announced the cancellation of WorldSkills Competition 2022 (WorldSkills Shanghai 2022).

Scheduled for 12–17 October 2022, the 46th WorldSkills Competition was originally planned for 2021 and was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The current lockdowns in Shanghai and ongoing pandemic prevention and control restrictions in China make hosting the event not possible in 2022.

“It is with deep disappointment that we announce the cancellation of WorldSkills Shanghai 2022. Looking ahead to the future, we have no doubt that when China hosts a WorldSkills Competition, it will be extraordinary,” said Chris Humphries, President and Chair of the Board, WorldSkills International.

“We are grateful for the time and resources that the Competitors and the committed supporters, employers, Experts, and Partners have invested in preparation for the event. Alongside WorldSkills Members and Partners, we are working actively to develop alternative competitive arrangements to celebrate your skills in 2022. Look for announcements by the end of June 2022.“

WorldSkills recognizes the extraordinary commitment shown by our Chinese host partners – the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS), the Municipality of Shanghai, WorldSkills China, and WorldSkills Shanghai 2022.

Following the WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France, in 2024, WorldSkills is considering bringing the WorldSkills Competition to Shanghai, China, in 2026, subject to the decision made by the Members at its General Assembly.

WorldSkills China expressed its regret for not being able to hold the Competition in 2022 as scheduled and is extremely grateful for the understanding and support of WorldSkills and its Members, Partners, and stakeholders. The aspiration and commitment of the Chinese side to support and participate in WorldSkills remains the same. WorldSkills China looks forward to the opportunity to develop and deliver the Competition in Shanghai in the future.

  • Skills Change Worlds – celebrating the impact of skills

Skills Change Worlds – celebrating the impact of skills

WorldSkills has published a global Impact Report and is sharing inspiring stories that demonstrate how skills change worlds.

Confident learners. Ambitious individuals. Inclusive workplaces. Productive businesses. Sustainable industries. Economic growth.

Skills help all these things thrive, which is why we need more skilled young people.

Today, we celebrate the positive impact that young people, educators, governments, and partners in the WorldSkills community are all having because of skills.

In 2021, WorldSkills International ran its first ever global Impact Survey. It was the biggest research programme the organisation has ever undertaken, designed to improve the way the international skills community collectively measures and shares impact. WorldSkills Members responded in earnest.

They shared data and stories about the impact they are having as they drive skills excellence in their countries and regions.

We learned how WorldSkills Members are helping young people reach further by unlocking the potential of technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Members are helping educators and governments raise the bar higher and set global standards that inspire everyone to excel at skills and be the best they can be. And they are helping governments and industries return more on their investment in skills so that our economies and societies can prosper.

WorldSkills has taken everything Members shared and gathered impact stories that demonstrate how skills change worlds. Our collective impact can be summed up in these five Impact Statements:

    1. WorldSkills increases the number of skilled young people
    2. WorldSkills improves standards of vocational training for all
    3. WorldSkills prepares young people for their future careers
    4. WorldSkills contributes to the success of industries
    5. WorldSkills improves economic growth and human development

Over the coming months, WorldSkills will share more of the impact of the WorldSkills movement. For now, you can watch the Impact campaign launch film, read Impact Stories, and download the Impact Report (PDF, 17MB).

Help us spread the word about the impact we are having by following #skillschangeworlds on social media, and share your own stories of impact telling everyone how skills have helped change your world.
